**The Best Version of Yourself**
It's 8.44am and I give her a kiss on her forehead and whisper "Have fun Boo, don't forget to be the best version of yourself. Love you".
She nods and runs to join the end of the line going into class, and I leave the playground knowing at just six years old she understands.
I stroll to nursery and the same is repeated at 9am. Only now with a little more time taken. "I am proud of you today Hero, Be the best version of yourself today. I'll see you in exactly 6 hours. I love you." And with some reluctance he goes to sit on the carpet.
Someone asked me today "Why the best version of yourself?" What does it mean?
So I thought I'd share with you what I told them.
I traded "Make me Proud" and "Be good" for "Be the best version of yourself" for these simple reasons.
Make me proud implies that my kids have to do something for me to be proud of them. When truth is I am proud of them just because of their existence. And as a young adult that grew up just wanting to make my father proud I don't want my children to feel the same. Also did you know it's one of the number one questions people want to know from spirit. "Are they proud of me?!". How eye opening is that.
All everyone one of us wants to do is be loved and know our parents are proud of us.
I tell the bears every night I love them oceans and oceans and I am very proud of them. Every Night. Because I've seen and heard enough times how important this simple act is.
So "Be Good" what does that mean? I don't actually know to be fair so how can I explain to my kids? Be Good? How do they know the fine line between defending themselves, being independent but also staying within the ever changing bracket of "Being Good".
It's too vague and again implies we are all able to squeeze into a perfectly labelled box ready to go up on the shelf with the others. It's not for me.
So that's how we got here..
"Being the best version of ourselves"
Being the best we can be today.
Always trying our best with whatever the day brings us.
Faults and mistakes included.
Then we take what we have learnt and use it to become tomorrows best version of ourselves.
