cornish drolls..
Cornish drolls are a captivating aspect of Cornish folklore and storytelling tradition. They are essentially humorous, often fantastical, short stories or anecdotes that have been orally passed down through generations in Cornwall, a county in the southwest of England, which I now consider myself honoured to call my home.
I have spent many lunch breaks over the years exploring the central Bristol library, searching for stories of the southwest and its people. I still remember my favourite days, curled up in a quiet corner as if I was in a library fairytale of my own, savouring every last minute of my lunch to dive into another world of magic and mystery. The southwest will always hold a significant place in my heart, and with my move to Cornwall, though fully aware and frequently reminded that I will never be truly Cornish, as a local, I felt compelled to delve further into the tales of one of the remaining wild lands here in the UK. This is how I came to learn about Cornish Drolls.
Drolls typically feature a mix of local characters, supernatural elements, and humorous situations. They can range from whimsical tales to stories with moral lessons or satirical commentary on societal norms. Some drolls may also incorporate elements of Cornish mythology and legends, such as tales of giants, piskies (Cornish fairies), and other fantastical creatures.
Droll tellers are individuals who specialize in recounting these traditional stories to entertain audiences. Historically, droll tellers would travel from town to town, performing in pubs, village halls, and other communal spaces. They often had a knack for improvisation and would tailor their performances to suit the preferences of their audience. A magician of storytelling, of sorts. Here are a few of my favourites.
